Baghdad by the Bay #2

There are 578 election precincts in the County of San Francisco. Kerry won every single precinct. Bush didn't manage to win in even one. In fact, there is only a single precinct in the entire city where Bush got as much as 40% of the votes cast, and there are only six precincts where he got as much as 35% of the vote. San Francisco was a Blue Landslide for Kerry.

Over the last forty years, San Francisco underwent a "blue shift." Politics moved to the left. What used to be the right wing disappered utterly. What used to be the center has almost disappeared and now occupies the far-right-wing position in the local political spectrum. The most "progressive" parts of the city are the Castro and Haight/Ashbury.

If you click on the map, you will see some red and blue precincts. The "red" ones are really blue but have been selected as those where Bush got at least %35 of the votes. (i.e. he lost by a landslide). The "blue" areas on the map are precints where Bush received less than five percent of the votes (i.e. Bush who?).

There still are political disagreements and fights here, but the conversation is completely on the left. It's the "progressives" vs. the "liberals." I'm not certain it is healthy for the city to exist in such a political monoculture, but it certainly is interesting.

P.S. Here is a link to the SF Department of Elections website where you can download all of the gory details for yourself, if you are so inclined.
